But I was painfully aware of my two daughters’ looming tuition bills plus my husband’s and my retirement needs. At a time when every penny counted my rollover IRA was parked in two plain-vanilla index mutual funds. I often wondered if I could do better given that I had written about taxes and investing for two decades. In my mid-life shoes men often become stock jockeys a la Jim Cramer. Like many women I’m more cautious but the project was enticing: It didn’t have to be a time sink and the benefits could be real. My family is not rich by Wall Street standards but a fundamental truth of investing is that over time small differences turn into big ones. ver a decade or more even one extra percentage point a year in rate of return can mean tens of thousands of dollars toward a $100000 retirement pot.

The answer is "not very" if that person has medical problems leads a largely sedentary lifestyle and hasn’t broken a sweat since the Carter administration. If on the other hand someone in his or her 70s is healthy fit and has been working out regularly then he or she may be able to handle quite rigorous workouts. Well a similar principle applies to investing which is to say that the way you allocate your retirement portfolio among stocks bonds and cash should depend not just on your age but your individual circumstances. For example if you’re 70 your only source of regular income is Social Security and you have a relatively small portfolio of investments that you depend heavily on to supplement your Social Security check then you can’t afford to get too aggressive in your investment strategy. If your small nest egg takes a big hit your standard of living could suffer dramatically. If on the other hand you have a generous pension in addition to Social Security plus a relatively large retirement portfolio on top of that then you can afford to take a bit more risk with your investments if you wish. If your portfolio gets whacked and you’ve got to scale back withdrawals your lifestyle won’t be in serious jeopardy since you’ve still got your other income to support you.

Nonetheless Graphit Kropfmeuhl has just obtained a licence to explore for graphite in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado. Eberling recognised that the Mozambican government is attempting to improve transport links with its programme to build and rehabilitate roads bridges and airports. He pointed out to his fellow businessmen that despite the small size of the Mozambican market Mozambique was a springboard “from which we can reach South Africa and other members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the context of regional integration”.

Current needs for use five years from now give to your heirs or charity etc. What is the time frame or time horizon for using this money? Will you need some or most of this money in the next year or two? If so a money market account may be the best place even though the interest rates are low.
