Morgan didn’t immediatelyreturn calls Monday. “A broker-dealer buying iShares is the most likely scenario I see if ithappens” said Matthew McCall president of Penn Financial Group an investmentadviser that specializes in portfolios of ETFs. A deal might also make sense for online broker Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW) ora large asset manager such as Vanguard Group or Pimco he said. Pimco and Schwab have registered ETFs with regulators signaling theirintention to join the rapidly expanding business. Barclays ranks as the biggest ETF manager followed by State Street Corp.

Finally I strongly believe a transportation reform plan will need to look at new ways of raising revenue to fund our priorities. Even with much-needed reforms to our system we simply do not have the money necessary to meet our transportation needs. Revenue is needed to fund our regional transportation systems reduce the underlying debt pulling down our transportation agencies renew investment in maintenance and day-to-day operations and increase investments in our commuter rail. The debate most recently has focused on raising tolls on the Masspike versus raising the gas tax. I have publicly supported a gas tax over raising tolls because it is the most equitable way to share the cost of maintaining our transportation system. No one region or group of commuters should be forced to shoulder the burden for the transportation needs of the entire state. The gas tax has not been increased since 1991 yet since then our transportation needs have grown and too many of our roads bridges and public transit systems are woefully inadequate.

The Cologne plant will share production with the factory in Craiova Romania of a new small-displacement EcoBoost gasoline engine; AP reports that a German government official puts the company’s investment there at approximately US$260 million but that Ford would not confirm the dollar amount. AP also says that Ford will institute four-day workweeks cut shifts and cut production of certain models at other factories in Europe in order to avoid job losses. “Cutting capacity reducing costs and safeguarding our future product plans are essential actions for Ford of Europe to sustain a viable business for the future” says John Fleming chief executive of Ford of Europe as quoted by AP.

With that in mind I’m going to describe a new tool that you can use to find promising growth stock candidates. By “growth stocks” I mean stocks that are expected to grow sales and earnings at least 15 percent annually Since long-term share prices usually track earnings these are usually the best stock price appreciation prospects. I’ll use Zacks Investment Research’s Custom Stock Screener to find the growth candidates. Stock screeners are Web-based tools that allow you to search the entire market for stocks meeting your particular selection requirements. Zacks’ Custom Stock Screener which is one of the most powerful free screeners around is not new. But until recently the screener was so difficult to use that I never mentioned it. Now Zacks has redesigned its screener to make it user-friendly and they’ve mostly succeeded.
