”
“We must invest in the future — now. And Better Place and its role in
establishing and building the EV infrastructure necessary to transform
the automotive industry and embrace 21st century technology is the best
kind of investment we can make,” said Alan Salzman, CEO and Managing
Partner, VantagePoint Venture Partners. “As a global leader in CleanTech
investing, VantagePoint Venture Partners is dedicated to working with
innovative entrepreneurial companies like Better Place and has committed
the resources of our Firm, our network, and our partners so that
Californians and others can benefit from a re-energized, electric auto
industry. ”
“While we expect oil prices to remain low in the short term, we believe
this environment creates an even more profitable window of opportunity
over the long term to invest in green infrastructure projects like
Better Place before oil returns to historic highs,” said Idan Ofer,
Chairman of Better Place and Chairman of Israel Corp. , which has a joint
venture with Chinese automobile manufacturer, Chery Corp. “We
fundamentally believe that the entire auto industry will switch to
electric cars when the environmental cost of producing polluting gas
cars has an even greater impact on their bottom line. ”
California now joins Israel, Denmark and Australia as the world’s
leaders in seeking to reduce their dependence on oil.

New Social Investing Rating Tool Helps Charity Givers Select …
AHN
(AHN) – Charitable donations must be viewed by philanthropists and kind-hearted companies as social investments. When selecting foundations or organizations to be the recipients of their donations, the donors must use risk analysis and other corporate tools. To help donors, the Working Group on Effective Social Investing will launch soon the Social Investing Rating Tool. It will provide givers a snapshot not only of how their money is being spent, but also if the charity is worth their donation. Robert Egger, president of D. Central Kitchen, one of the participants in the first meeting of the working group, said, quoted by the Washington Post, “There are commonly accepted metrics to be able to say this is a good corporation or a good restaurant or a good movie, but there are none of those metrics for the nonprofit sector, and there have to be.
Dollar-cost averaging can make the best of a bad market

CHICAGO — The stock market’s wild gyrations and steep declines have brought a new appreciation for an old investing strategy: dollar-cost averaging. “This is the best time to be doing it,” says Vita Nelson, editor and publisher of The MoneyPaper, a Mamaroneck, N. -based financial newsletter that has long touted the concept.
Shorts, Puts, Cash and Funds: Investing in Bear Market
Seeking Alpha, NY
Never short a stock without hedging. You might be watching the market, then get up and go to the bathroom, come back a half hour later and discover that you’ve been wiped out!"Even though my bathroom breaks are not that long, he does have a good point. A few months ago, shortly after I shorted a high stock price real estate investment trust, the position went against me by 13 points. That’s a $1,300 loss for every hundred shares in one day! I still had the short position after the market closed, and had the pleasure of trying to sleep at night, wondering if there was going to be a takeover the next morning or some other good news that would drive the price even higher, making my losses worse. So in summery, do I think you should short stocks? Absolutely not. The risk is unbelievable. If you understand options real well, hedged short selling might be OK, as long as you are an advanced trader, and know what you’re doing.

Investing in the future of our children
Arizona Daily Star, AZ
Chief among these challenges is adequate investment in infrastructure ? roads, transit, electricity, drinking water, telecommunications, but also health care and public safety and the educational infrastructure of our public schools and the three state universities. Last Monday Arizona State University was honored to welcome elected policy-makers and prominent leaders from the public and private sectors to the forum "Preparing for an Arizona of 10 Million People: Meeting the Infrastructure Challenges of Growth. " The purpose of the gathering, tagged "Arizona 2030," was to address some of the major challenges facing the state’s public and private sectors as a result of rapid growth. While there was broad agreement that our success is contingent on an optimal infrastructure, I would argue that when it comes to reaching the consensus required for policy to advance and investment to be made, Arizonans still lack a sufficient sense of clarity and urgency. Despite chronic underinvestment in our state’s infrastructure, contentious debate over whether or not we should commit to meet the infrastructure needs of the present and future prevents us from acting in our own self- interest.
