However the virus that has hit the financial
facet of the globe has also taken a toll on the assets under management (AUM) of
the global funds or feeder funds-a fund that invests solely in another fund
(primarily a foreign fund), known as the master fund, with a view of investing
in global equities. ?There will certainly be
a slowdown in the pace with which the AMCs were coming out with feeder funds. In
fact the current crisis will cause fund houses to defer their plans of launching
feeder funds as people would hesitate from investing in them,? says Waqar
Naqvi, CEO, Taurus AMC. Some AMCs believe that it has become a bit of a
challenge to raise funds even for domestic equity funds and hence expecting a
decent corpus for feeder funds is actually being over
optimistic. Almost all fund
houses that have global funds as a product have seen the AUM of their global
funds falling by over 15% from June 2008 to September 2008. Fund houses like ING
Investment Management saw the AUM of their Global Real Estate fund dipping from
Rs 247cr in May 2008 to Rs 200cr in September 2008. JP Morgan AMC?s CEO
Krishnamurthy Vijayan says, ?We have received approvals to launch four
feeder funds.
